What
Will SigEp Give Me?
There are numerous benefits to not just being
Greek, but being a SigEp.
A
Feeling of Belonging
The Greek Advantage:
Many students at Austin Peay feel as if they are alone. Residence halls
claim to provide a "home", but they really don't go far enough.
Many students fail to complete college simply because of this feeling.
Greek organizations provide friends and a support system during your college
years. And after graduation, fraternities provide a place to come back
to, meet old friends, and share new experiences. Residence halls can not
provide this.
The SigEp Advantage:
With Sigma Phi Epsilon, you have a support group of 70 of Austin Peay's
best and brightest young men whom you have chosen to associate with. In
SigEp, the opportunity exists to make meaningful, lifelong friendships
through sharing meaningful, constructive experiences - not through hazing,
harassment, or other demeaning activities. And it extends beyond APSU;
Sigma Phi Epsilon has the "red door, open door" policy for all
brothers across the nation - a great benefit from the nation's largest
fraternity.
Academics
The
Greek Advantage:
Less than half of non-Greek students graduate from college
within six years. Greek students, on the other hand, graduate at a 70%
rate nationally. Greek students at Austin Peay consistently perform well
above the all-campus GPA.
The SigEp Advantage:
Sigma Phi Epsilon at APSU has had the top grades among fraternities for
the last 12 out of 13 years while consistently performing above the all-campus
average GPA. Monitored class room attendance, study hours, academic speakers,
and thorough use of university academic resources all help to ensure that
SigEps perform at their academic best. When it comes to academics, we
recruit the best, and we expect the best.
Athletics
The
Greek Advantage:
When living in a fraternity, a member will have a great opportunity to
play a pick-up game of basketball with his brothers, or compete in numerous
intramurals throughout the year.
The SigEp Advantage:
A significant part of the Balanced Man Program is the "Sound
Mind, Sound Body" initiative. By upholding this standard SigEp has
been consistently fielding strong teams in all sports. In 2008, we captured
the coveted All Sports Trophy by outperforming all other fraternities
in a five-sport competition. We have had many members in numerous varsity
sports from Cross Country to Football which no other APSU fraternity can
boast. Sigma Phi Epsilon's winning atmosphere makes it easy for all members
to become involved athletically.
Leadership
The
Greek Advantage:
Greeks dominate as student leaders on Austin Peay's campus. Greek students
are leaders in groups ranging from the student government association
to major-specific organizations. In addition to campus activities, our
Greek organizations are organized and self-governed by APSU students.
Whether it's planning homecoming activities, building a web page, or simply
helping on a community service project, you'll develop skills that will
directly benefit you in life.
The SigEp Advantage:
In today's competitive employment world, businesses today place a premium
on people with leadership ability in addition to classroom performance,
and SigEp leads the way among fraternities in campus involvement. To name
a few, The Student Government President is a SigEp, the Student
Government Secretary is a SigEp, the Student Government Chief Justice
is a SigEp, many of the Men's Residence Hall RA's are SigEps, and so are
many of the men in the President's Emerging Leaders Program at Austin
Peay. Other members of Sigma Phi Epsilon at APSU are involved
in dozens of on-campus organizations such as the Student Government Association,
Tribunal, the Interfraternity Council, Mock Trial, Governor's Ambassadors,
Student Alumni Association, various honor societies, and many major-related
interest groups. Sigma Phi Epsilon also offers everyone the opportunity
to develop leadership skills within the chapter by way of officer and
brotherhood responsibilities. An important part of this is of course the
Balanced Man Program.
Community
Service
The
Greek Advantage:
One of the great things about Greek Life is the continued support of the
community. Many Greek organizations have regular community service projects
that they regularly contribute to. You cannot find that kind of provided
programming in other student organizations.
The SigEp Advantage:
Sigma Phi Epsilon has been an active participant in community service
work for many years. SigEp at Austin Peay requires all of its members
to participate in both individual and group community service projects.
Our individual chapter involves itself in several service projects every
year including Adopt-A-Highway and Read Across America. We also set aside
one week each year for our annual Cinco De Suess philanthropy week, in
which we raise thousands of dollars for St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
Individually, some of our members have worked with ASP in West Virginia,
Habitat for Humanity, and the Clarksville YMCA, just to name a few. We
have received recognition for our community service efforts from the University
and from the community itself.
Social
Opportunities
The
Greek Advantage:
Undoubtedly, one of the main benefits of the Greek system
is the social opportunities that one can find in fraternity or sorority
living. There are no better times found than those spent in the myriad
of activities that Greek life has to offer.
The SigEp Advantage:
Sigma Phi Epsilon offers one of the most complete social calendars in
the APSU Greek system. Formals, brotherhood nights, and sorority mixers
are just a few of the opportunities that Sigma Phi Epsilon offers to meet
people and enhance social skills. We have won 1st place in the APSU Homecoming
Float competition 12 of the past 13 years.
Career
& Networking
The Greek Advantage:
Everyone comes to college with the same eventual goal in mind: to secure
a good job after graduation. Greeks nationally have achieved some noteworthy
accomplishments in their career fields.
The SigEp Advantage:
Sigma Phi Epsilon members are constantly seeking to improve their future
employability by actively seeking out internships and other means to enhance
their skills. Numerous members hold down internships in a wide variety
of career fields. Also, in today's job market, who you know can be as
valuable as what you know. With Sigma Phi Epsilon, you will have a network
of alumni who can help to make sure you're prepared for the job market
and help to open doors for you. |
